I am an avid reader and I read a lot of books but I do love sci-fi and horror novels!
My favourite Sci-fi author HAS to be Kim Stanley Robinson!! His work is inspirational. He covers a lot of topics from Earth such as global warming and nuclear war to the colonization of our solar system and terraforming of other planets etc. I always wind up starting a novel and then can't seem to put it down. He always get me to stop and think!
I was just wondering if anyone has read any noteworthy sci-fi/horror novels or comics etc.

I unfortunately do not do as much reading as I would like too, but based on what I have read, Tucker's monster (its more adventure than SciFi, but has some SciFi elements)
The Walking Dead (Its a comic, but it is everything a good horror should be. The focus is barely on the zombies. Everything is about the people)

Ok, I'm a dinosaur and grew up during the 50's and 60's. My heros were Clark, Heinlein, Asimov, E.E. 'Doc' Smith (best bang-bang shoot-em up sci-fi ever written and since Doc Smith was a PhD physicist, his science is solid once you give him his one or two 'suspension of believe' items. Tucker's Monster was quite good. WARNING: RANT FOLLOWS! I don't spend time with the global warming, eco disaster junk science non-sense. As an astrophysicist I assure you that man made global warming is absolute non-sense. It is a get rich quick, global governance scam fostered on those who still believe that what passes for journalism in today's world is somehow different than the 'journalism' in Pravda. If you ever get in this discussion with some 'watermelon' (green on the outside, red on the inside) make them answer one simple question before the discussion proceeds. What I have never gotten an answer to is this: "Exactly what is the IDEAL temperature for the entire planet?" If you can't answer that how can you tell me that for the planet as a whole that global warming or cooling is good or bad. The earth has been both hotter (around 1000 AD - the medieval warm period (and I assure you my Suburban did NOT contribute to that warming)) and colder (the Maunder minimum science.jrank.org/pages/4184/Maunder-Minimum.html ) than it is today with both huge advances in human civilization (warm period) and ice age conditions (the minimum). I don't tend to waste my time with science illiterates; it is part of why I avoid fantasy writing. END OF RANT. I do enjoy the work of Niven and Pournelle. If you haven't read the "Mote in God's Eye" you've missed a classic that I rank with Asimov's best. $8 on amazon www.amazon.com/Mote-Gods-Eye-Larry-Niven/dp/0671741926Just my not so humble opinion.

Oh, heck yes. I don't believe I left off H.G. or Jules Verne! Absolutely brilliant stuff. OK, the science is a tad dated but who cares, the stories are consistent and great. Also loved 'Time Machine'. Heck, I've never seen anything by either that was not enjoyable reading. If you've missed Asimov's Dr. Urth (pronounced 'Earth', of course) stories you've got a treat coming. He's an exo-biologist who hates the outdoors, travel or anything else outside his home but is a brilliant detective.

A movie not a book, BUT - I was watching the coverage over what has happened in Japan and remember thinking, "Lord, it looks like Godzilla go them". No sooner had I thought that when the news show ran the scene of Godzilla emerging from Tokyo Bay and walking through the oil tanks and power lines. It FIT the scenes but good grief, how weird is it that the news media thought so?

That is wierd...are you talking about the original or the 2004 remake?

original ... it was SO much scarier in black and white. The remake was OK but the original was top of the line - except for sobbing female lead ... I was hoping Godzilla would EAT her but he probably would have gotten indigestion.

Yeah, when there is a female lead, they should choose some like Crystal Allen (Anaconda 3: Offspring and Anaconda 4: Trail of Blood) or the actress who played Rosalita in Tremors: The Series. I've seen some terrible lead females when the one who lives is a better actress. Like Sasquatch, the lead female is torn in half near the close, but how is she the lead when all she does is scream and run, and she barely did anything.

The best female leads that I can really think of are Sigourney Weaver in the Alien movies and Linda Hamilton in the Terminator movies.

4-12, agreed. Both do an excellent job of being a head-screwed-on-straight female. I liked Reba in T1 - she was cool, but I think you may have picked two of the best around. Again not a book but I've started liking the 'Firefly' TV series as well. Real solid characters (good female characters and easy on the eyes) and the sci-fi is used to create interesting situations; much like the original Star Trek did. I LIKED the episode where the bad guy tells the skipper he WILL hunt him down and kill him; the skipper says, 'I believe you'; then kicks him into an engine inlet! The only proper response to 'I'll get you no matter what it takes' threat.

After watching Firefly and Serenity, I have a whole lot more to say about female leads!!!
And you you didn't see the show Firefly, and the movie Serenity, watch them now. The TV show first. You will not be disappointed.
