I posted this in error in Feeding Frenzy ... should be in Night -
Frenzy Night is a great example of folks who 'plan for success'. Around here (NASA) we keep getting the 'failure is not an option - plan for success' nonsense. Anyone who has done much flying knows that failure is not optional - it WILL occur so you'd better have a Plan D (that is for when plans B and C don't work - and sometimes they don't). On something as critical as the BMU to only have 2 to begin with and then let one get out of range was really dumb. To open that van door prior to checking out the functioning of the BMU and collar was fatally stupid. An amazingly large number of folks seem to live life on the premise that things "just have to work out right". When they don't, these folks are lost, confused, and unable to make alternate plans. Burt's 'I seem to be the only one with a plan for dealing with the [situation]' was the exactly correct response to Nancey. That he had to blow up his house was totally irrelevant to the situation at hand but to her, it was a strong argument for Burt to sit back and wait for the 'experts' to make everything right.

Night of the shriekers had some excellent Burt one liners. I still loved "back up, back up generator". I deal with 'know it all know nothings' on almost a daily bases. People with some education but no real world experience can be absolutely dangerous. In this case the good doctor could not see the insanity of trying to teach shriekers to not eat what they find. If the BMU had gone out, or been blocked with rubble, or just out of range, or the collar damaged by debris, the 'rescued' victim could and would quickly become Shrieker chow. When the new Shrieker is then (is hatched the right word here?) 'hatched' it would have no collar and would quickly eat all of the would be rescuers. A true receipt for disaster that could only appeal to an over educated know nothing with no real world common sense.

You know ... that would make a great background for another sanctioned event for Burt and Tyler ... I do want the series back!

I do want the series back! So do I. I didn't know there even was a TV series until late 2009, and I thought Night of the Shriekers was the name for Tremors 5 then.
