Hi all,
As you may be aware for the past couple of years I've been working on a Tremors fan film called, "Tremors - On New Ground". We've recently finished a three minute teaser trailer and there's a new website, (which isn't up tho). The script is finished, and we are practically ready to shoot this summer...
Apart from the fact the core team just quit. Their fears were that Universal would sue us for everything we had, etc. Now, it was not my intention but the producers had hoped to get the fan-film aired on local television, which of course using the name "Tremors" and the like-ness of a Graboid, could have got us sued. So fair enough. I must emphasise that it was never my intention to have it aired on ANY television channel - my intention was to have it for download and available on DVD etc for the price of the materials and p&p.
The only way to continue the project would be to make it simply for everyone who is involved's showreels. A showreel is a DVD, or video etc that you can show to prospective employers, film companies etc to show off your work. It was originally intended also to put it up for download for free, and also distribute it for the cost of the DVD/VCD/Video etc too.
So none the less, T-ONG has no team anymore, which has been a severe blow to me cos the project has been in the works for more than four years in total, and was set to rock and roll this summer.
I've emailed Universal (for the second time) but as with the first, I've heard nothing from them. Basically, I was asking permission for creating the project and being able to have it up for free download and send it out to people on VCD/DVD/Video etc. Does anyone know how legal that is? My only fear is that if I try and revive the project, no-one will want to help out because all we can create is a production for showreel, which is 50% useless because the intention was that fans can see the production too.
This means I can't put the trailer up for download I'm afraid, because the team advised me not too saying that Uni will sue me. If anyone from Stampede has any comments on this I'd love to hear, or anyone that deals with copyright and so forth.
This therefore, leaves me at a loss. What do I do? Cancel the project completely? Find a new team and explain to them that we can't distribute the project? Or do I keep trying for permission to be able to put the fan-film up for download and distribute it for free to people who want to see it.
It's a big blow, quite upsetting too after all the work we'd done on the teaser and so forth. One of the team members quoted how it had been a "waste of six months" of his life, which got me quite angry. Others said it had been fun working on it and it had been an experience. So, I'm at a loss. I'm all for continuing it and getting it done, I just don't know how legal it is. It's to be shot on DV, so it's not like the quality will "rival" any of the other movies etc.
Well there you have it.
