www.facebook.com/TremorsMovies/videos/vb.219867764699795/1042522525767644/?type=2&theaterThe first teaser for Tremors 5 just hit and I am... disappointed. My God. I never, ever wanted to say that. Me, of all people. But, what the heck are these new monsters supposed to be? It doesn't look like they put any thought into them at all. They don't even look like they fit in with the creatures we've seen in the other films. They look like.... generic movie monsters. There goes my good mood. All these years and this happens. Out of blind hope I'm still going to get the film day one and hope for the best. Michael Gross is going to be great as usual, I'm sure. But I just feel so burnt and I don't want to feel that way. I've supported this series in all of its incarnations for as long as I can remember. I've loved every installment, the TV series, everything. Please, please let this movie be good. But my hype has decreased. And it really hurts to say that. I want Stampede back. Give me Wilson and Maddock.

I thought they looked like a natural progression of ass blasters.

I better-collected my thoughts and wrote a little blurb on Facebook. Here's what I had to say:
Tremors has been one of my favorite movies, maybe even my absolute favorite movie, since I was very, very young. I've supported the series in all of its incarnations through the years, through three direct-to-video sequels and a short-lived television series. The last installment in the series came in 2004, eleven years ago. Last year it was announced that finally, after all that time, a new film would be coming – but with a catch. None of the original creators who have been behind all of previous installments of the series would be involved. Universal had essentially shut them out, handing the film over to their own direct-to-video department instead. The follow-ups to the original film have always been low-budget, little-known films, but they've always had a certain degree of fun and genuine charm to them that, in my opinion at least, allowed them to stack up and compare to the original despite the significantly reduced budgets. It pains me to say this, but I am not getting that vibe at all from this trailer. Most of my reluctance comes from the creatures, which are just are not sitting well with me at all. The creatures of Tremors – be they the classic Graboids or any of their genetic offshoots explored in the sequels – have always been fairly goofy, but they were designed and brought to life in such a way that always felt natural to the series. They were not always entirely realistic, but they were believable enough and grounded within the internal logic of the series enough that they felt right at home. They were very distinct to this series and original in their design and execution. What's seen in this trailer just looks to me like "generic movie monster 101." Where is Studio ADI or KNB Effects and their work? Both the redesign of the Graboid and the new creature glimpsed in this trailer just look and feel so different from everything in the earlier films rather than an evolution of the creatures we have previously seen, just as the trailer itself doesn't feel like an evolution of the Tremors films we have previously seen. The biggest glimmer of hope that I'm seeing comes in the form of returning actor Michael Gross, who was present in all of the films and the television series as fan-favorite Burt Gummer (except in the fourth film, where he instead played Burt’s great-grandfather Hiram). It is due to his presence alone that I am still holding out hope that something good can come out of all this. Michael Gross' Burt Gummer has been one of my favorite movie characters for as long as I can remember, and he looks to be his usual self – albeit a bit older – in this trailer, so seeing him return to this character again after so many years is bound to be exciting. The trailer gives me hope for that, at least. I just hope that the film itself can exceed my now-lowered expectations and become something I can at least appreciate, if not genuinely enjoy, as a longtime fan of the series.

I think it looks decent, at least entertaining. Can't pass too much judgement yet as far as the creature goes because I am not so sure the Graboids or Assblasters we get will be the same thing anyway, so they can pretty much do what they want on a different continent with a new variation of the monsters we know.

Watched the trailer another million times and I am definitely looking more forward to it than I was yesterday, but it just feels so weird seeing it in different hands. I really, really hope for the best, but I'm not going in with any expectations. Just pleasantly surprise me is all I ask. As far as the creatures go, I'm still not overly fond of them. They seem too "movie monster" to me and not enough Graboid. They look like something that would be at home in the TV series, but not as a stage in Graboid evolution. Even with it being a different overseas strain. In a more positive light, you don't know how good it feels to have Burt back.
