Because Universal really doesn't care. They never have, and this whole thing is just more evidence of that. Stampede tried to get a theatrical film off the ground, but universal opted to let their contract expire and then just do another DTV film themselves. Them offering Stampede "executive producer" roles without actually letting them do anything was pretty much a slap in the face. I am still beyond excited for the film (how could I not be? I've been dying for this for the last ten years), and still definitely have faith in it. Michael Gross seems beyond enthusiastic about the film, if his Facebook posts are anything to go by (he didn't have to come back, after all). The even greater budget cut sucks, and I'm a bit nervous about whatever limitations Universal put on the story (since, creatively, the first four will all purely Stampede in that regard), but for now I'm remaining hopeful. Stampede was absolutely right when they described the whole thing as bittersweet. It's not just that way for them; it's like that for the fans as well. Maybe if this is successful Universal will be willing to do another one with a bit higher budget and more creative freedom, and Stampede and Universal will be able to renegotiate to work something out.

Greed never did any movie series any favors. Poor Stampede, its their baby. I am also beyond excited but can't help feel its a bit tainted by this. Michael Gross seems excited about it though so that's something.

Yup. It's Michael Gross that's the big draw for me now. Feeling really bitter about the Stampede thing because of how it went down. And you can't really fault Paul or any of the other guys involved. They had nothing to do with this fallout, and I'm sure they only want to make the best movie that they can with what they've got. So for their sake as well, I really hope this is good.

Thats true, at the very least the writer helped write Tremors 3 so he isn't completely clueless about the series. Might even mention El Blanco at least.

Michael Gross weighed in on the Stampede situation a bit in a comment on Facebook:
Also, according to Gross' most recent Facebook update, today is the last day of filming!

Aw, man. This was a bad way to start my weekend. I'm still excited at a new Tremors film, but I really hoped Stampede would at least be a little bit involved. Just a little. And that idea of a theatrical film sounds amazing, can't believe Universal turned that down. It's almost a done-deal to become a cult hit. An independent theatrical film about underground monsters in the tone of a late-80s monster movie? Come on, Universal, wake up.

Aye, it is extremely unfortunate that nothing ever came of that theatrical idea that they had pitched.
But hey, if this is successful (and if the last three films are anything to go by, it should definitely be financially successful as far as DTV films go) who knows what could happen next.

Yeah, a sixth film is almost guaranteed as long as this one makes a profit. But I want it to make the exact right degree of profit. Enough to warrant a new film, but just little enough that they consider bringing Stampede back on.

Yup. That would be the absolute best thing for everyone involved.

Gross says a bit more about the split:

Either way I'm just glad Gross decided to join the project. If we are going to get this franchise going again, we'll need him for at least one or two more films. He's almost everything that's left of the brand at this point.
