So I was reading another thread on here where someone mentioned that Tremors was their favourite horror movie. I was wondering, is it technically a Horror film or a Sci-Fi film?
I always thought it was Sci-Fi, but if it's Horror then I am genuinely surprised. I don't like Horror films at all. Not because they scare me, but because I find them boring and full of mindless fears. I need real-life suspense to get me scared. Filling a story with a bunch of creepy scenes with no real story is just pointless to me, and not at all scary. So if Tremors really is a Horror, then it's the one and only Horror film I've ever truly enjoyed.

I always kind of figured it as a monster movie and totally applicable as a horror or sci-fi, but that's just me.

Horror-comedy is the label I usually use, though it definitely has sci-fi elements as well.

I dunno, maybe I just didn't see the "horror" when I first watched it as a kid, and then since it was after I discovered the series that I really sat and watched them again, I was biased on the whole "mixmaster" situation and stuff.

We'll Mixmaster kind of makes it more sci-fi when you put it that way.

*Well
Yeah, but that's mostly the show, not the movies. Mixmaster isn't even hinted at in them, since it "technically" didn't exist yet (did in the Tremors world, but not in ours, lol).

I've always put Tremors in my movie collection under the Horror genre. It is an homage to monster movies from the 50's, so I can definitely see why people call it a sci-fi since those movies usually get filed in that genre, though.

That is an interesting question. I tend to see horror movies as a Friday the 13th kind of thing. I am not a fan of horror flicks in general as they seem way to forced (I can't think of a better word) and formula driven. (From a Big Band episode - Sheldon:"Better listen to her - don't open the door, Jim. {door slam - scream}")
I put science fiction into things like 2001 A Space Odyssey or Babylon 5, Forbidden Planet, Day the Earth Stood Still or even Flash Gordon. I always list a third genre - I always include Monster films as a separate class. Think of The Thing, The Beast from 20,000 fathoms, Tremors or, one of my favorite classes, any bad, Japanese monster flick (Godzilla (original) was actually pretty good).
There are plenty of movies in each category, but I find few true horror films that I like. Some of Hitchcock's works are brilliant and a few of the old classics (Invisible man, Frankenstein, King Kong etc) are good but once the special effects folks discovered splatter, I lost all interest in watching graphic violence.
So my vote for the Tremors franchise is Monster flick, neither Science Fiction nor Horror. Just my not so humble opinion of course.
