This occurred to me recently.
Since El Blanco and Graboids in general hunt by sound and vibration, why don't the residents of Perfection insulate their houses (or at least the floors) against this?
If the sound and vibration couldn't travel into the ground, El Blanco wouldn't be able to sense the location of anyone inside the buildings.
Essentially, as long as you were inside the building, he wouldn't know you were there.

Pretty interesting thought, never thought of that one.

Well, at the end of the third movie Burt said something along the lines of reinforcing all of Perfection with concrete like he did with his house, but that apparently hasn't happened yet by the time the series takes place.
My guess is that funding is the main reason.

Three words - environmental impact study. Can you imagine the hoops you'd have to jump through to construct ANYTHING in the habitat of an endangered species. Then it becomes a freaking 'super fund' site because of MixMaster and bang, you're done building ANYTHING. Burt got his done before the endangered species thing but after him, only the PSP type planking used at the bio site would be allowed. Even then, it'd be a huge deal to set up anything. I'm just amazed they get to repair anything. You certainly could not make additions. No permits would ever be issued. Gotta love red tape. As Burt says,"They are NOT your friends"!

I'm sure if the tv series continued it could have hinted or talked about those very topics, captbart.

Yep, I'm sure it could have been done very well. With all the "Doomsday" stuff on TV now, I'm a little surprised that the series is not brought back. Probably need new stars for a good bit of the action but it could really be cool with the right actors.

I know this is an old conversation, but I just wanna add in, even if no one ever sees it.....
captbart, that's not entirely true. Because of their special status and "arrangement" with Twitchell, they should be able to do some insulating and such on the buildings already there. If they aren't allowed to do that, then they certainly wouldn't be allowed to deepen the well, which they talk about near the end of the season without any comments on needing special permission or anything.
And I highly doubt they would become a "super fund" site if they're not already. Mixmaster is a government secret, and so far the only known scientists who know about it are Casey and Roger. They declared Melvin's Oasis a super fund site because it was outside Perfection Valley and they needed to make sure to contain any loose Mixmaster there (even though technically it should've already gotten out since the shrimp was in the water, but they seemed to forget the whole "dead cells" thing in that episode....).
I'm sure if they really really needed to add any buildings or something, they could get a permit or go-ahead from Twitchell. They're not exactly a "normal" endangered species habitat: Most of their existence is classified.
